Life can be so sweet...On
the sunny side of the street
|
In 1930, American composer and prolific songwriter Jimmy
McHugh composed what was to become the jazz standard, On the Sunny Side of the
Street. Broadway lyricist Dorothy Fields provided the words, from which this
quote is taken.
The song came on the heels of the stock market crash of 1929
and suggested listeners leave their worries at the door and cross over to the
sunny side of the street. Over the years, it has been recorded by everybody
from Dave Brubeck to Lionel Hampton, Cyndi Lauper, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland,
Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie
Holiday.
Our personal favorite is Holiday’s
rendition on the 1972 Atlantic Recording album, Strange Fruit.
On the Sunny Side of
the Street
Grab your coat and get your hat, leave your worry at the
doorstep
Just direct your feet to the sunny side of the street
Can't you hear that pitter pat and that happy tune is your
step
Life can be so sweet on the sunny side of the street
I used to walk in the shade with those blues on parade
But I'm not afraid 'cause this rover, crossed over
If I never had a cent I'll be as rich as Rockfeller
Gold dust at my feet on the sunny side of the street
With those blues on parade
Because this rover, it crossed over
If I never had a cent I'll be as loaded as old Rockfeller
With that gold dust 'round my feet
On the sunny side of the street
On the side, at that side of the street that is sunny With those blues on parade
Because this rover, it crossed over
If I never had a cent I'll be as loaded as old Rockfeller
With that gold dust 'round my feet
On the sunny side of the street
On the side, at that side of the street that is sunny
