Laughter is the sun that drives winter from the human face  -- Victor Hugo

French author Victor-Marie Hugo is best known these days for his novels Les Miserables and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Finding it difficult to finish the latter book and hounded by his publisher, Hugo bought a new bottle of ink and a woolen cloak, then locked himself in his room for six months until the ink was about to run out. Considered one of France's most important Romantic writers, Hugo was also a poet, playwright, essayist and political activist, who found himself exiled from France at one point for 19 years.
