Do something beautiful ...

If you've ever read the picture book Miss Rumphius to your child, you may be interested in how the life of author/illustrator Barbara Cooney mirrored the fictional character's. The pretend Miss Rumphius had a house by the sea, traveled abroad and planted blue, purple and rose-colored lupine flowers everywhere. The real-life Miss Cooper resided in Portland, Maine, loved to travel and was a dedicated gardener. Both women did the most difficult thing, as the author says in her book: "You must do something to make the world more beautiful."
