Gulf of Mexico...

Riptide warning
For the first time this season, I headed to the beach. I went all the way to the Gulf of Mexico to stretch out in the white sand. The sand is so white there it’s the color of cotton or snow. As I drove across the bridge to Pensacola Beach, I noticed the red flags flapping in the wind, warning people not to enter the water. I had hoped to drive all the way to Fort Pickens, where Geronimo was imprisoned, at the end of the barrier island. I was forced to stop, however, 14 miles short. The road was still closed due to Hurricane Ivan. With the wind swirling around me, I surveyed the distance, covered with sand and spray. Then I spread my towel by the other tourists and observed the crashing waves through the haze.
