Kentucky Derby’s Eight Belles ...
Those
who love horses continue to mourn the death of Eight Belles, the only
female to race in the Kentucky Derby in Louisville this year. The filly
placed second after Big Brown, but was euthanized at the finish line
after having fractured both her front ankles this past Saturday. Inside
the filly’s darkened, empty stall – No. 11 in Barn 43 – a fan has
placed a glass vase with a dozen red roses. The red rose is the
Kentucky Derby’s flower. A card by the flowers reads: “Eight Belles,
you were courageous and beautiful and we will miss you, but never
forget you.”
